This course provides an understanding of the essential features, operations, and limitations of today's computer networks. Students will learn about systems both on premises and in the cloud as the course balances technical concepts with practical, everyday issues. This course covers the latest developments and practices in cloud business principles and security techniques, software-defined networking, 5G, the Internet of Things, data analytics and supporting remote workforces. Hands-on learning features and thought-provoking content provide guidance on virtual networking technologies, industry convergence and wired and wireless LAN technologies.

Target group
This course is intended for people who want to learn about telecommunication as well as those who want to formalise their Computer Network knowledge.

This course has one mode namely a web-based mode

Web-based course
This course is presented in a paperless, web-based mode.  Students require a permanent e-mail address as well as a personal Internet connection, which may be at home or from work.  An Internet Cafe solution is not a suitable Internet connection, since most of these types of connections do not allow for PDF readable formats, which is the basic format of all electronic notes of this course.  Course notes are made available on the web and the download of the material is the responsibility of the student.

Kind of assessment

Note: Formative assessment and examination admission will comply with UNISA’s formative assessment rules and policies.
Formative assessment: Two assignments throughout the semester.
Summative assessment: One non-venue based portfolio-based assesment.
